One way to get more excellence is to reward more excellence. I feel that the leaders of Starkville should look for ways to encourage and promote excellence by highlighting successful local examples. The city website would be a great starting place to publicly recognize our local success stories and accomplishments.
Sadly, many people are unknown at home but widely respected among their peers worldwide. We have people living in Starkville who are achieving amazing things on a vast scale; however, few in our community know of their achievements. We can do better than that.
It’s easy to think we can’t do big things because we haven’t seen big things. However, we have people in our community who can think big and dream bigger. Let’s encourage them publicly and welcome their work. Let’s celebrate their achievements and support their efforts. Let us learn from them and together lift our community.
When we see an attitude of excellence we see that it is contagious. That’s a good thing and a wonderful attribute to build, especially for our young people. We can and should do more to look for ways to encourage excellence.
